REPOSITORY PinusLetter 2008/2020 - OUR ARCHIVES

In this section, we are bringing to you a consolidation of most of our editorial and technological creation efforts to create the PinusLetter editions between 2008 and 2020, offering you the opportunity to recall our texts about pine trees and other forest species published across the fifty-eight editions of this newsletter, which was produced and has been distributed free of charge in digital media.

Therefore, we believe that this Retrospective will facilitate research for locating topics that readers may be interested in studying or researching regarding Pinus, Araucaria, and other forest species, as well as the benefits brought by planting and cultivating their forests and using their products.

When you find the technical material that interests you based on the title in English, simply click on it and you will be immediately directed to the text, which may be in html or pdf format, but in Portuguese, in most of the cases. Feel free to download, save or print the material at no cost. If you are going to use any of our texts in an article, lecture, thesis or similar, we only ask that you remember to reference it in the bibliography, so that we can receive the distinction of this mention in the publication of your technical material.

Each edition of PinusLetter is organized into Sections, some that are repeated almost always and others occasionally. These sections contain texts, tutorials, reviews or collections. In addition, each edition includes a feature "Technical Articles written by Ester & Celso Foelkel", or a partnership between them, in the form of a comprehensive review and always seeking maximum applicability. The "Technical Articles" have covered an interesting variety of topics, ranging from silvicultural aspects, genetic improvement, environmental control, and the uses and applications of products derived from Pinus and other planted forest species.

The sections "Events and Courses References", "Pests and Diseases of Pines", and "Reader’s Contributions" appear alternately or occasionally depending on the edition. In these sections, we aim to present texts, articles, interesting websites to browse, literature, lectures, course materials, conference proceedings, external contributions, etc. Most of the material is related to pines and other conifers. The "Pinus-Links" section, which usually appears fairly frequently in PinusLetter editions, was not included in this retrospective because it is quite generic and simple, and many of the suggested links have a short lifespan on the web. To access them, you must browse through each edition of PinusLetter or use the website's search engine. They only appear openly and separately in broader and more specific situations, where there is a central theme that can serve as the foundation for the entire section – generally, this happens more in the "Pests and Diseases of Pines" section, and occasionally in the "Reader's Contributions" section, when a specific theme or author is being honored through a selection of technical contributions to the sector and to pine or other commercially valuable conifers and broadleaf trees.

A negative characteristic of many web publications, such as those listed as literature in our editions, has been the varying periods of time they remain available for public access: many are maintained for short or medium periods, while very few have their web addresses permanently maintained. For this reason, it is possible that when clicking on a bibliographic reference, it is no longer available on the website that hosted it.

In addition to these sections, we have a broad and eclectic section called "Technical References from Virtual Literature," whose content varies with each edition, sometimes honoring "Great Authors about the Pines" and other times offering "Articles, Theses, and Dissertations on Pines" published by universities or relevant research and study institutions worldwide. In 2014, this section was expanded to include a variation created for research in technical journals or relevant institutions related to the generation of knowledge about pine. It offers selections of articles, texts, lectures, or videos and was named "Mining Knowledge about Pine".

One successful section has been the one where we occasionally invite some personalities from the sector to write something about Pinus or other conifers. This takes place in the section "Hearing the Words coming from Great Authors about Pines”. We hope you appreciate this way of bringing even more news written by renowned people from the forestry and wood technology sector.

A section that has always interested many of our readers has been "The Ibero-American Conifers", aimed at introducing knowledge about the species of Pinus and other conifers that have been commercially planted in Brazil, other Latin American countries, and the Iberian Peninsula, regions where our readers are concentrated. Numerous species of Pinus and other interesting conifers have had detailed morphological and taxonomic descriptions, and their main characteristics and uses have been shown and demonstrated. Since virtually all conifers of commercial value to the Iberian and Latin American regions were featured in the first dozen editions of PinusLetter, we decided to broaden the scope of this section purpose, and we created the section "Species of Forest Importance to Ibero-America", intended to share knowledge about broadleaf/hardwood species and some monocotyledons, such as the bamboo.

Due to the difficulties that pine cultivation has faced at some Brazilian regions, whether in the reduction of planted areas or in environmental quality problems, and even in relation to its products, we have a special section called "Problems and Challenges for the Pines" whose mission is to discuss these relevant topics on these issues.

From middle 2012, after the departure of Dr. Ester Foelkel from the editorial team, some more sections were created to tell you about: "Curiosities and Singularities about the Forest-Based Sector" – "Collection of Texts by Celso Foelkel" - "Celso Foelkel’s Life Reports", among other and varied topics about the forest-based sector, according to the vision and history reported by Professor Celso Foelkel.

In 2015, a section called "Technical Materials from Our Partners" was created, with the purpose of bringing to public knowledge some interesting technical news published by or about the companies that sponsor or facilitate the generation and dissemination of PinusLetter. In 2016, a section called "Interviewing Those Who Know Things about the Pines" was created with the purpose of presenting dialogues with people and representatives of entities relevant to the forest-based sector.

Starting with issue number 52 in May 2018, we began offering "Retrievals of Materials from National and International Events" that had played an important role in the accumulation of knowledge about the forest-based sector (industrial and forestry). These events included articles on Pinus, many conifers/broadleaf trees, and other species of high economic and social value.

A wide section on important knowledge about pines is the one named “Texts, Tutorials and Special Collections on Relevant Topics about the Pines”. Most of the texts are based on literature review and on the author’s experiences. The issues for this specific section are based on the suggestions from our readers, covering practical topics of great interest regarding Pinus.

We invite you to visit our 2008/2020 archives and access our technical output, according to your interests, via the links provided in the sections described herein.

Thank you, dear friends, for your visit to Professor Celso Foelkel's website and for reading and browsing our texts and information reports about pine and other forest species: their forests, processes, and products. These writings have been created, designed, and made available to be useful to you. Ester Foelkel and I did this with great enthusiasm and a strong vocation and emphasis on teaching, because we believe that the acts of educating and adding/transferring knowledge are some of the best ways to develop society in its pursuit of cultural, intellectual, emotional, and human growth.
